La Luz De Jesus Gallery proudly presents our 13th annual juried group exhibition, “Everything But the Kitsch ‘N Sync”. This gigantic, no-theme exhibition features work from some of the freshest and most relevant artists working today. We invited commercial illustrators, graphic designers, tattooists, scenic painters, students, and animators to submit, and we sorted through tens of thousands of submissions before finalizing the list below. The show includes artists we have previously exhibited, who consistently produce some of the most interesting paintings and sculptures in pop contemporary, as well as a large selection of work from a brand new batch of undiscovered, underground talent. Since opening our doors in 1986, the focus has always been to grant exposure to emerging talent while continuing to showcase our established stars, and that esthetic remains more true than ever before this year. In fact, we have the highest concentration we’ve ever had of artists making their art gallery debuts in this exhibition. Add to that a wide percentage of professionals making their Los Angeles and North American debuts, and that makes this an exhibition you really can’t afford to miss. This is a wonderful forum for us and our public to get the first glimpse of tomorrow’s stars. It is also an incredible opportunity for art collectors to peruse close to 300 pieces of juried artwork by nearly 150 artists all in one viewing, and obtain undiscovered art at undiscovered prices. Please join us for our lucky thirteenth as we continue to support the latest and most original efforts from the nation’s alternative art scene.

Opening Reception - Friday, January 8th, 7-10pm

Behold the land where vikings ride skeletal steeds into battle, and winged, fire-breathing metal griffins navigate the cosmos! Bask in the glow of fur-wearing barbarians and scantily clad she-devils! Fight along side massive robots of destruction against the relentless hordes of hell! See art inspired by the imagery of classic metal album covers. This show will melt the flesh from your bones and make you want to bust out a ripping guitar solo! It will make your eyeballs bleed and your skull explode.
The METAL MASTERS show will feature paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture inspired by heavy metal album art of the 80’s.

CARRBORO, NC (November 27, 2009) — Wootini Gallery is excited to announce METAL MASTERS, a group exhibition of new works by accomplished artists brought together by special guest curator David K. Rose (aka DKR). David is a painter, designer, musician, Guitar Hero artist, and wrestling producer now based in Los Angeles, CA; Wootini represents much of David’s art collection in North Carolina, David’s home state. The theme of this show is best summarized by Manowar, “Everyone of us has heard the call, Brothers of True Metal proud and standing tall, We know the power within us has brought us to this hall, There’s magic in the metal, There’s magic in us all.”

Partial list of participating artists include:

Skinner, Martin Ontiveros, Bwana Spoons, Dwitt, Mike “Maximum Flouride” Fisher, Paul Friedrich, Jonathan Peedin, Casey Porn, Brendan Wiuff, David K. Rose, and more

Painting Process Part 3

admin | NEWS | Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Now comes my favorite part. This is the part where i start putting down the first initial pass of color. Sometimes I attack the canvas all at once but with this piece (partly because it’s so big), I focusing on one area at a time. I’m not going to polish anything yet, just going to get the color and shapes down.

Painting Process Part 2

admin | NEWS | Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

So now that I’ve gotten my ground down, I start working on the composition. This time around I’m using charcoal to figure out the composition. After many failed attempts, I’ve come up with something that I want to move forward to the next stage with.

Painting Process Part 1

admin | NEWS | Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I’ve always loved seeing other artists’s process for creation. To that end, I’ve finally decided to post the process on one of my paintings. I’m currently working on a 6 ft x 4 ft piece and I figured it was as good as any to document the process on.

1) After stretching the canvas (which took a lot longer than i wanted to), I broke out my big bag of collage pieces. I used lots of gel medium and water to put them down. I had some idea thematically what I wanted to do but generally I didn’t sweat the placement too much. I like the happy accidents that can occur, plus i will end up painting over a lot of it.
